Day 1: Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge – 5 hour walkWelcome to the start of the Queen Charlotte Track. Ship Cove gave safe harbour to the famous explorer Captain James Cook on five occasions during the 1770’s. Visit the monument and read all about his epic journeys. The track out of Ship Cove climbs quite steeply through virgin native bush dominated by Nikau palms, Rimu, Totara, and Beech trees. From the saddle, descend to Resolution Bay. Call in at Resolution Bay Cabins for coffee and muffins before the gentle climb to Tawa Saddle. Overlook Endeavour Inlet, before descending to the shoreline. Walk through the small settlement of The Pines to Furneaux Lodge. Day 2: Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove/Camp Bay – 4 hour walkToday is a relatively light day, so take the side walk to the Furneaux Waterfall through stunning native bush. Rejoin the track to Endeavour Head, site of a mining operation employing 300 people at the turn of the century. Interpretation panels show the mining of stibnite for production of antimony, a metal to harden steel and for production of pewter. Most of the Queen Charlotte Track was originally used as a bridle track by local farmers and miners. Follow the coast just above sea level around Endeavour Inlet, into Big Bay, and on to Punga Cove Resort. Day 3: Punga Cove to Portage – 8 hour walk Walk up to the Kenepuru Saddle to rejoin the ridgeline track for the next 20 kms. After 1.45hours, turnoff to “Eatwells Lookout” for great views. Pick up the track again to Bay of Many Coves Shelter. Top up your water bottle here. The only other water station is at the Black Rock Shelter. Section ends at the head of Torea Bay by the war memorial. Turn right down the hill into Kenepuru Sound and to the Portage Resort Hotel. If you are on a five day itinerary, consider a day’s sea kayaking on your rest day from Portage Resort Hotel. Day 4: Portage to Anakiwa – 7 hour walkJoin the track at Torea Saddle. The next hour is a solid climb to the main ridge between Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds. Take the lookout walk for extra views. The drop down to Te Mahia Saddle at the head of Onahau Bay is fairly easy going. The Vogel Walk side track, amid beech forest and Bell-bird song to Mistletoe Bay, is well worth-while. Pick up the track again around Onahau Bay to the headland. Descend slowly through beautiful native forest to Davies Bay. Only 3 km (approx 40 minutes) through magnificent Beech forest to Anakiwa remain. Exit the track and walk around the bay to Tirimoana Jetty for water taxi return to Picton.
